Large glass container used to hold ether
Ether was first publicly demonstrated as an anesthetic in 1846 and became a popular anesthetic thereafter. It declined in popularity once chloroform began to be used, but quickly replaced it again at the start of the 20th century due to the discovery of the harmful side effects of chloroform. Its use slowly declined again towards the end of the 20th century, as hospitals began replacing it with non-flammable options. Ether, while an effective anesthetic, caused multiple factory explosions throughout its use, and so is now rarely used in favor of safer anesthetics.
