A metal wire chloroform inhaler
This mask would cover the patient’s nose and mouth, while the cloth on top would have chloroform slowly dropped onto it until the surgery was over. Chloroform was a popular alternative to ether before 1900, when scientists discovered the extended use of chloroform could cause liver disease. Although its use slowly died out, it wasn’t until another few decades that it almost completely stopped being used in practice.
